Our member-guest tournament – traditionally called No Le Hace, which roughly translates to, “It Doesn’t Matter,” had always been a big tournament at San Antonio Country Club. However, excitement had waned in recent years, so for the 2017 event, we put a committee together that included myself, my PGA Head Professional and five members to generate enthusiasm for the event. In fact, we had styrofoam cups made up that said, “Make the No Le Great Again,” and had them in the men’s grill months before the event. The committee also talked it up among the membership, and we came up with a great San Antonio-style tee gift, a guayabera shirt, as well as a custom set of boots by a local boot maker for the low net winners, and logoed belt buckle for the overall gross winners.
With the enthusiasm generated by the tournament committee, we sold out the 2017 member-guest event a few months before the event and had a wait list. They talked up the event and helped make it a huge success. It was very effective. We had a full field of 104 participants, including people who came as guests from across the country who had never seen a guayabera before. The whole event had a real Texas feel, complete with a Mariachi band.
