Matt Montecucco is a PGA Assistant Professional at Lake Spanaway Golf Club in Tacoma, Washington.
In an attempt to engage local golfers, PGA Associate Shane Prante and I organized a series of “Play With PGA Professional” events. We offered a free warm-up session on the range for the participants. Then, we take them out for nine holes of on-course instruction. Finally, we close the event with a group dinner. While on the course there is nobody keeping score, and they have the freedom to drop another ball as they please. The dinner gives us the opportunity to network and strengthen the relationships with our participants. The goal is to create a comfortable environment for students that eliminates the fear of keeping score. We want to enable golfers to meet fellow golfers of similar skill level so they realize that everyone is a “work in progress,” even PGA Professionals!
These events provide our PGA Professionals the opportunity to get their name out and find new opportunities. We recently completed our fourth of these events and had 15 people attend. In order to encourage them to return we give each participant a range card that entitles them to five buckets of balls and a coupon to play the course on their next visit. We have acquired multiple long-term customers through this simple gesture. In the long-term, the lifetime value of each of these customers far exceeds the minimal costs that we incur through this offer. Ultimately, these events benefit our entire facility, and allow us to have fun along the way.
