Super Bowl XLIV Colts’ Coach Caldwell, Saints’ Hero Porter Anchor Coaching Presentations on PGA Forum Stage Friday

Coaching golf students at various levels will be the theme on the PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA on Friday, with prominent NFL coach Jim Caldwell (Colts, Ravens, Lions and Dolphins) and NFL player Tracy Porter providing “Keys to Motivating Athletes at All Levels” at 9 a.m. A College Coaches Town Hall will follow at 10 a.m., with a Women’s Golf Town Hall scheduled for 11 a.m. on the closing day of the 2020 PGA Merchandise Show.

“Coaching players in any sport is all about recognizing different personalities and helping those players reach their maximum potential, whether it is football, golf or another sport,” said Caldwell. “A lot of coaching is encouraging people to be the best they can be with the talents they have, and helping them work on various aspects of their sport to build confidence.”

Caldwell, who served as head coach at Wake Forest University for eight years, replaced Tony Dungy as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts on Jan. 12, 2009. The Colts sprinted to a 14-0 start under Caldwell and quarterback Peyton Manning, winning the AFC South title and advancing to Super Bowl XLIV, where the Colts fell to the New Orleans Saints, 31-17. Caldwell is the last rookie head coach to reach the Super Bowl.

Ironically, Tracy Porter — who will appear with Caldwell on the PGA Forum Stage today — was also a significant part of the Saints’ victory over the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV in Miami. After four seasons in New Orleans, the cornerback spent a single season with the Broncos, Raiders and Redskins, and two seasons with the Bears before injuries prompted his retirement before the 2017 NFL season.

Caldwell guided the Detroit Lions to two playoff berths after being named head coach in 2014 and coached in the Motor City until 2017. After the Miami Dolphins hired New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores as their new head coach, Caldwell was hired to Flores’ staff as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach on February 8, 2019.

Also on tap for Friday: Carl Paulson and some of the most successful collegiate coaches in golf – including NCAA Champion Conrad Ray (Stanford), Trey Jones (Florida State) and Frank Darby, PGA (St. Johns, Manhattan) – will share their thoughts on college coaching and mentoring up-and-coming players from 10-11 a.m.

Shortly after, SiriusXM host and top instructor Debbie Doniger, PGA; former college player and 34 Group CEO Patti Thomas; PGA Teaching Professional and Women’s Golf League Founder Mike D’Agostino, PGA; and Carl Paulson will discuss the growth of women’s professional and amateur golf, and efforts to continue to increase female participation in the game.
