Dynamic speaker outlines path to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion at golf clubs

Ron Williams, an internationally recognized speaker and consultant for the U.S. Mint, delivered a high-energy, dynamic examination of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and provided a game plan for implementing DEI initiatives at golf facilities during an insightful PGA Show Education session Thursday afternoon at the Orange County Convention Center.

Williams explored the core concepts of diversity and inclusion, learning why these initiatives are crucial for the growth and sustainability of clubs. He also noted the benefits that a diverse and inclusive culture brings, including enhanced member satisfaction, increased creativity and innovation, and a stronger sense of community.

“By understanding these benefits, we become better equipped to advocate for diversity and inclusion within our own organizations,” said Williams. “With diversity, equity and inclusion, you’re either part of the problem or part of the solution. Many people say they want to effect change, but then they take a seat and support the status quo instead of standing up to make a stand.”

Williams said DEI cannot be a one-time campaign or a one-off initiative – it’s a continuous process of improvement and should be maintained and nurtured to guarantee effectiveness.

The Chicago native told attendees to imagine their clubs as a bridge connecting its storied past to an exciting, inclusive future.

“Tradition provides stability, a sense of belonging, and a rich narrative that connects club member across generations,” Willims noted.

“Transformation brings adaptability, fresh perspectives and the courage to evolve in a rapidly changing world. Together, they provide a culture that respects the timeless while embracing the timely, ensuring that the club remains relevant and vibrant for current and future members.”

Williams said by acknowledging the importance of heritage while adopting practices that welcome diversity, equity and inclusion, private golf clubs can redefine exclusivity as a place where all members feel valued and respected.

“I implore you to take courageous strides, not merely the ones that feel comfortable,” he said. “Dare to defy limitations, question conventions, and reshape your club into a sanctuary where equity transcends aspiration, becoming a shared truth lived every day.  Let this workshop be a call to courage – embrace the path of resistance over convenience.”

Williams, who has worked in sports throughout his career – for Wilson Sporting Goods, Champion and Nike – told attendees at the education session to “step boldly beyond the familiar, dismantle outdated norms and cultivate a club where diversity and equity are woven into its very fabric.

“Transform your club into a testament for inclusion, where fairness is not just spoken of, but deeply felt, honored and lived,” Williams implored. “For real change to happen, you must intellectually and emotionally buy into the value of DEI.”
